Return of the "Dead Things" in Detroit?

With the news of Mike Babcock possibly becoming the Buffalo Sabres head coach in recent weeks sense the firing of former coach Ted Nolen, there was a lot of speculation yesterday whether or not he would come here to Buffalo or remain as the coach for the Detroit Red Wings.  As an interesting turn of events that have come about earlier today neither is happening.  According to multiple of sources such as TSN’s Darren Drager,  and Bob McKenzie who are both the two of the best insiders in Hockey, have reported earlier there was a new face in the race for Babcock’s services. ...

They are the Toronto Maple Leafs, who begun to have a bidding war with the Sabres Wednesday morning to gain his coaching services.  Babcock is widely considered by most to be the premiere coach in the game.  It was reported that the Sabres had offered him roughly 5 million per year, and that it would be a total of 50 million.  As of yesterday all signs were pointing that the Sabres had the best chance to land him, in fact they were in contract talks with Mr. Babcock throughout the last afternoon hours and into the evening.  A reported 8 Million through 8 years was offered to Babcock far exceeding the Sabres offer of 5 million per year and an overall amount of 50 million dollars. But was this about the money, or was it something else?

While I believe that the money was a big reason I think there’s another piece to this.  He wanted more control of the team meaning he wanted to almost act as GM and that he could possibly overrule what the GM does if it’s a trade, free agency signing, etc.  Now Sabres fans have been left in the dust and now the organization needs to find the next candidate.  There is one that I would like to see and that is Dan Bylsma.  Bylsma is a great coach in his own right and was fired as the Penguins coach last summer, but didn’t leave without seeing success.

He has won the Stanley Cup with the Pen’s in his tenure as coach of the Penguins and matter of fact beat Babcock’s Red Wings after losing to them in the finals the year prior.  He isn’t a major down grade from Babcock, but at the same time he isn’t as good as Babcock but the Sabres fans will see life after all of this.  We have a great group of great young talent with us landing ether Conner McDavid and Jack Eichel who are both generational talents and corner stones for anyone that drafts them, though in all likely hood the Sabres will draft Eichel.  But the future is bright in Buffalo regardless of who they have as there coach.
