2016 AFL Preview: Round Three

Two important matches this week - the derbies. But those won't be the only good matches after what we saw last week.Though I think the Western Derby will be more entertaining, I think that only the West Coast will win whereas in the Sydney Derby, I'm picking against the Swans and going with Greater Western Sydney.

*All times US EDT (-5 GMT)

Game of the Round
Sydney Swans (2-0) vs. GWS Giants (1-1)
Sydney Derby
Time: Sat 2:35a, SCG
Line: Sydney (-18.5)
The Scoop: In the ninth ever installment of this matchup, this looks to be another classic with Sydney being Sydney and GWS pushing for their first finals series appearance. Though it isn't the first round as we've often see, it is still early enough in the season.
Outlook: Giants by a kick.

Top Attractions
West Coast Eagles (1-1) vs. Fremantle Dockers (0-2)
Western Derby
Time: Sat 5:40a, Domain Stadium
Line: West Coast (-18.5)
The Scoop: In this 44th meeting of the two teams that topped the regular season ladder last season, both teams had opposite starts. The showed us why they were both minor premiers  and Grand Finalists last season. Freo has started poorly, but whether their form will continue as such is yet to be seen. But it will surely be fun to find out how the west was won!
Outlook: Eagles by 13.

Western Bulldogs (2-0) vs. Hawthorn Hawks (1-1)

Time: Sun 1:20am, Etihad Stadium
Line: Hawthorn (-8.5)
The Scoop: The Dogs have been impressive since their campaign got off to a flying start last year to aid with the introduction of the club's new logo. The Hawks are three-peaters and back-to-back-to-back-to-back Grand Finalists and have every reason to be favored to win.
Outlook: Dogs by 2.

Best of the Rest

St. Kilda Saints (0-2) vs. Collingwood Magpies (1-1)
Time: Fri 11:45a, MCG
Line: Collingwood (-16.5)
The Scoop: After losing two big players, the Pies responded well to show that regardless the opponent, they can win games without them. St. Kilda can show signs of improvement this season, but it may take a few more games.
Outlook: Saints by 8.

Richmond Tigers (1-1) vs. Adelaide Crows (1-1)
Time: Saturday 12:10a, Etihad Stadium
Line: Adelaide (-1.5)
The Scoop: Adelaide is a team that manages to keep missing out on finals, but no Dangerfield to mea means worse performance given his position. This also happens to be a finals team from last yearwho looked very good against the dismal Blues.
Outlook: Tigerland by 5.

Gold Coast Suns (2-0) vs. Carlton Blues (0-2)
Time: Sat 5:25a, Metricon Stadium
Line: Gold Coast (-30.5)
The Scoop: Wow, where has the Gold Coast come from?! They're the big statement makers right now. Sorry but I have nothing good to say about Carlton right now.
Outlook: Sunsby 41.

North Melbourne Kangaroos (2-0) vs. Melbourne Demons (1-1)
Time: Fri 11:10p, Blundstone Arena
Line: North (-21.5)
The Scoop: The Roos go up against a much improved Dees from a few seasons ago. In addition, Melbourne are in contention for finals footy for the first time in a long while. Meanwhile the Kangas will look to improve their consistency as they have two more seasons to fulfill the prophecy to win a flag by 2017.
Outlook: Shinboner Spirit by 10.

Geelong Cats (1-1) vs. Brisbane Lions (0-2)
Time: Sun 2:40a, Simmonds Stadium
Line: Geelong (-55.5)
The Scoop: Brisbane can play, but it is selective. Geelong are far from the Grand Finalist of yester year, but there is still a lot of quality in this current side. Give Brisbane a little more credit than they're getting, though.
Outlook: Kardinians of Geelong by 37.

Dog of The Day
Port Adelaide Power (1-1) vs. Essendon Bombers (1-1)
Time: Fri 5:50a, Adelaide Oval
Line: Port Adelaide(-51.5)
The Scoop: It's been all down hill since the scandal that rocked the Windy Hill, so we don't need to talk about Essendon. But what about the Power from Port? They have been under achieving the past few season and the potential that has been relatively untapped is finally coming around (we all think).
Outlook: Port by 69.

Should be a fun week - a few derbies, none like the Showdown despite the blow out, but still. The Q-Clash is next week also, with the ANZAC Day match to follow the round after. I'm just going to enjoy North's winning form and leave it at that.
